The Iranian passport is the official travel document issued to Iranian nationals for international travel and serves as proof of Iranian citizenship. Because Iran does not recognize other citizenships for its nationals (Iran does not allow renunciation of Iranian citizenship in most cases), anyone born to an Iranian father — and in many cases an Iranian mother — is considered an Iranian citizen regardless of where they were born or what other passports they hold. This means Iranians and their children living abroad, even those born outside Iran and holding only a foreign passport, are generally required to travel to Iran on an Iranian passport, not on their U.S., Canadian, or other foreign passport.

How the Process Works for Iranians Abroad

Since Iran and the United States do not have direct diplomatic relations, passport applications from the U.S. are handled through the Iranian Interests Section in Washington, D.C. (operating under Daftar.org), rather than through an embassy. The general process includes:

1. 1Registering the application through the Mikhak system — Iran's mandatory online portal for all consular applications submitted from abroad.
2. 2Gathering required documents, which typically include your current or expired passport, your Shenasnameh, your National ID Card if you have one, recent Iranian-standard photos, and (for men of conscription age) a military service completion or exemption card.
3. 3Submitting the completed application package to the Iranian Interests Section, generally by mail — travel to Washington, D.C. is not required for standard adult passport renewals.
4. 4Waiting for processing, which commonly takes several weeks to a few months depending on document completeness and consular volume.

What to Watch For

If your Shenasnameh has never been updated to reflect a marriage, a child's birth, or a legal name change, your passport application may be rejected or delayed until those underlying records are corrected first. It's worth checking your other Iranian civil documents before applying for or renewing a passport.
